First, when Fedex delivered the box you may have thought you were getting a new TV, or maybe a window air conditioner or even a new chandelier. Thankfully, when you opened the box, you found your new doll bed. At least we hope you did! We go "green" whenever we can and we recycle, recycle, recycle! So whatever boxes we can get from family, friends or even enemies, we take, store and use for shipping whenever we can.

The set up of your bed is fairly painless. That is once you get through all the packing materials. Was all that packing material necessary you ask? YES! We want your bed to arrive in good shape! We first wrap the bed in waxed paper to protect the finish. Then in bubble wrap (to protect the waxed paper). Not really. But you understand the concept.

Then, to protect it further, we use as much packing material around the bed as we can. We do understand that not all our packing is considered "green" but we do what we can. Of utmost importance to us is that your bed arrives unbroken and in good condition.

In the box you will find a smaller box, actually a photo storage box, with the name of the bedding in the name plate on one end of the box. Inside that small box is all the bedding required to complete the bed.

Now to the setup.

1) Open the box from the top. Under some of the packing material you will find 2 ziplock plastic bags. One will contain large screws. They are to be used to attach the side rails to the headboard and footboard. The other bag contains the small appliques that will cover the screws on the footboard and the screws needed to attached them to the bed.

2) Carefully unwrap all items. If you are using a knife to cut through the tape and packing material, please be careful that you do not scratch the finish on the bed.

3) The side rails will have a strip of wood on the inside. That is where the bunky board will sit. Under that strip of wood is a velcro strip that will be used to attach the dust ruffle.

4) Using the large screws provided and a phillips head screwdriver, align the screw holes in the headboard to the pilot holes in the footboard and attach, making sure that the side rail with the wood and velcro strip is to the inside of the bed. The rails are not interchangeable. Make sure, by lining up the screw holes that you have the correct rail on the correct side of the bed.

5) In the same manner, attach the footboard to the side rails with the rest of the large screws.

6) Using the small screws, attach the small appliques to the footboard, lining them up so they cover the two screw holes used to attach the footboard to the side rails.

7) Once the bed is assembled, attach the dust ruffle. There are 3 dust ruffles, with velcro on the top of each. The two long ones are for the sides and the short one for the footboard. Attach them to the velcro strip on the rails and footboard.

8) Once the bed is assembled, and the dust ruffles attached, lay the bunky board in the bed, so it rests on the wooden strips.

9) Next, put the mattress on top of the bunky board.

10) The rest is pretty self explanatory. Put on the sheet, tucking it under at the foot and on the sides of the bed.

11) Next, place the comforter on the bed, also tucking it under at the foot and on the sides, much like wrapping a box.

12) Lay the coverlet over the comforter where the bottom edge will just come to the end of the bed. Turn it back so the reverse side can be seen.

13) Place the pillow, bolster pillow and accent pillow at the head of the bed.

14) Voila! Completed doll bed!

Been really busy... I know that is not a good excuse. But here I am, finally posting the ornaments I received in the Make Mine Pink ornament swap.

First, my ornament from Mary at Mary's Cottage Treasures. Have you ever seen a cuter angel? I think not.
She is just adorable and she has my name. What a coincidence!!

Next is a very unique and creative ornament made from an antique oil spout. The santa, tinsel and ornaments are also vintage. This came from Meri at Imagimeris. I doubt she really knows how well this fits in this old house.

Now to the ones I sent out. And yes I realize that mine are not very creative. I did learn through all this that this may not be my forte. I believe I have a better understanding of the process now and if I could do it all over again... but I can't. So here they are.

This first one was to Mary. It's kind of hard to see but the top of the ornament is an angel. Mary likes angels.

Next, the green one to Meri.

This one to Joanne. I know it looks as though it is red and purple, but it is really red and blue.
Anybody can make these."

Original recipe yield 4 1/2 dozen

•2/3 cup shortening
•2/3 cup butter
•1 1/2 cups white sugar
•2 eggs
•2 teaspoons vanilla extract
•3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
•2 teaspoons baking powder
•1 teaspoon salt
•1/3 cup granulated sugar for decoration

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a medium bowl, cream together the butter, shortening and sugar. Stir in the eggs and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt, stir into the creamed mixture until dough comes together. Roll dough into walnut sized balls and roll the balls in sugar. Place them on an unprepared cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake cookies 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven, until bottom is light brown. Remove from baking sheets to cool on wire racks.Verahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16662023648184723433noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6279758933165889486.post-54096415402171715732010-10-13T16:09:00.018-05:002010-10-13T20:29:14.019-05:00Make Mine Pink Ornament Swap!

HAVE FUN CREATING!Verahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16662023648184723433noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6279758933165889486.post-25053413981334692762010-08-12T17:33:00.000-05:002010-08-12T17:33:20.568-05:00Problem... SolutionProblem
Remodeling is or can be a test of your creativity. The room where the breakfast nook is now, was the back porch. It is on the west side of the house so we intended to put up two ceiling fans. As happens regularly around here, we changed our minds and decided to extend the house to include that space. However, we now had two holes in the ceiling and neither of them in the right place for a light fixture. (The middle hole was cut for the light fixture.)

I could have purchased a couple of ceiling medallions and covered the holes, but thought that would look a little strange. I mean, what would people think? That I was trying to cover some holes? Maybe. (Not that I truly care what people think.)

So... remembering back. When we started remodeling 3 years ago we found newspapers dated from 1968, the year Chester and I graduated high school. They had been used for insulation behind some old paneling. I had put them in a plastic bag and stored them, thinking that someday they might come in handy. (Strange, weird, coincidence: The day I was putting this all together, Chester was looking over the newspapers and miscellaneous stuff I had laid out on my craft table. He asked if I had noticed the date on the newspapers. I hadn't. All I remembered was that they were from 1968. They were dated August 4, 1968. What was the current day? August 4, 2010. Just sayin'.) From Sandy with HobNobbers, I had received some old hymnal pages through a Valentine swap.

I asked Chester to cut a piece of masonite large enough to cover the holes. Then I glued sections of the newspaper along with pieces of the hymnal pages to it, making a collage. The color of the yellowed newspaper worked great with the colors in the dining chair fabric and also with the wall color in the adjoining living room. Then I covered the edge in lip cord and trim to match the chairs.

Now our new breakfast nook is complete! Well, not really, but if you know me at all you know what I mean.
The name of the newsletter is "Sassy Stitches."

The owner, Jeannie, sent me some photos today of photos she wanted included in the newsletter for this quarter. This photo was one of them. The quilt won at the Trinity Valley show in Texas and several other shows.

I just had to share it with everyone.

BTW... if she is willing to sell it... I have first dibs!!!!
Almost! Just Needs A Tub!Although it would be really nice to say this room is finished, complete, done!... we still need the tub. The clawfoot tub has had to be put on a way back burner. It will happen. Just won't be in the near future. So I figured I might as well put the room together as if it weren't going to have a tub.

I did manage to fit in a full size bed. The chair, however, still needs to be upholstered. Can't decide on the fabric. Other than that, it is ready for overnight guests.

Personally, I wouldn't have put the commode in the middle of the wall. But this was already done when I arrived on the scene. Perhaps some sort of screen placed in front? I'll be honest, when in use, you feel as if you are on display.

This is from the doorway. The light from the 2 north windows is very bright and makes it almost impossible to see the window treatments. They are there... just very sheer. 2 of the walls are covered with wood harvested from the ceilings in the old living room. The area above the wood planks, the ceiling and the area around the half circle window is rusted sheet metal from an old barn Chester tore down. No, we are not going to paint it. It's perfect just the way it is.

This wall was the outside of the original farm house, which was built somewhere around the turn of the century. It was uncovered after Chester tore off 2 layers of sheet rock and a layer of the ugliest paneling I have ever seen.
The tin ceiling panel on the wall was rescued from an old building they were remodeling in downtown Ft. Smith. It is in it's original condition. Well, the condition it was in when I got it.

I picked up this wonderful tri-fold Venetian mirror at an antique auction in Ft. Worth.

This is just inside the door, at the end of the bed.
The chair is one of two, plus a settee that I also got from the Ft. Worth auction. They are Egyptian and were in deplorable condition. Looked they had been in a bar fight. Busted arms and what appeared to be blood on the upholstery. Don't even want to know the story behind that. Stripped them of everything, including the straw cushioning (whatever was on the upholstery had soaked through, YUCK!), down to the bare wood and then antiqued them with cream and white.

All it needs (well, besides the tub and upholstery for the chair) is a pillow from C'est Chouette for the bed!Verahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16662023648184723433noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6279758933165889486.post-49025943485954540012010-05-30T17:27:00.003-05:002010-05-30T17:30:09.727-05:00A Visit From A FriendI was all set to blog about the new bathroom.

Then this afternoon we had a visit from Larry, our electrician, and his mother. Larry is a great guy, very easy going, in his mid-forties. He has long blond hair, half way down his back, which he always has sectioned off with rubber bands. He rides a harley. He knows I like things done my way. He's told Chester on numerous occasions, "If mama ain't happy, no body's happy."

We found out a few weeks ago that Larry has pancreatic cancer. Apparently the percentage of people who live 5 years past diagnosis is rare.

Larry had open heart surgery 3 years ago so they do not want to do invasive surgery now. He is going to Tulsa in a couple of weeks to be treated with the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System. It s a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors anywhere in the body, including the prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas and kidney. The treatment – which delivers high doses of radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy – offers new hope to patients who have inoperable or surgically complex tumors, or who may be looking for a non-surgical option.

He came by to find out when he could get started on the rest of our electrical work because he feels his time is short. He doesn't even care if he gets paid. He just doesn't want to leave us in a bind and having to look for another electrician to finish his work.

I spent an hour or so talking with his mom, who is a very interesting lady. We talked about all kinds of things. I found out she is an accomplished artist from Bronx, NY. She teaches watercolor art classes, sews and basically does all kinds of crafting. Needless to say we hit it off right away.

By the time she left I knew all about Larry's kids and their bad eating habits, his girlfriend and her bad eating habits. His mom is a vegetarian, doesn't eat dairy... she's very health conscious. And she is on a mission to build Larry's immune system up so hopefully his body will be better able to handle the chemo.

I also learned that her husband passed away one year ago today.

We are praying that Larry's treatment goes well and he beats this thing. We welcome your prayers, too.Verahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16662023648184723433noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6279758933165889486.post-34420322550627868332010-05-06T18:37:00.001-05:002010-05-06T18:41:17.409-05:00The Remodel House Is Complete (at least our part)!!!After what seems like an eternity, the house we have been remodeling is finished, except for carpet which we have nothing to do with (a sliver lining).

After my elbow got messed up, poor Chester had to do all the running around for supplies. But finally, by Tuesday evening all was complete.

The photos don't really show how bad this house was. And of course the after photos don't really show how well it turned out. That's how is is with photos sometimes!

This is the kitchen before. The cabinet doors had already been taken off before I got there.

These two photos are after.

This refrigerator cabinet had been moved into the hall so it was a little difficult to get a good pic.

After, and in it's permanent location.

This is the living room.

And after.

I can tell you that I am happy, happy, happy it is over. We have so much to do at home so we are redirecting our energy to our own backyard, roof, windows, floors...

And what a win. Within just a few days I received the box from Sandy. I opened the outer box and then realized (this is Sandy we are talking about) that there were lots of goodies inside. All packaged as little presents! I knew I needed to have time to take photos as I took them out and just had time to do it today. This is what I found inside the box.
Just get over it. Probably a blessing in disguise. So today I stopped by the antique mall today to rent a booth. I just think it is something I need to do again. Before I left I decided to take a look around. Good Thing!!! What do you think I found? Of course... a mannequin. She is in pretty good condition and I'm going to ask for help to bring her to an exceptional condition.

Not only that but I picked up some great ribbon and lace and some wonderful wooden thread holders.

Ok, I think I'm through for the day.

Thanks for stopping by.

'til next time.Verahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16662023648184723433noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6279758933165889486.post-54288830547233442972010-02-21T10:36:00.007-06:002010-02-21T20:04:42.313-06:00To The Auction!Ok, I admit it. I LOVE auctions. Am actually addicted to auctions. And I set really good, strict guidelines for myself.
Such as;
1) I will only bid on the items I have picked out beforehand. (That's a good one. Will never happen but it sounds great.)
2) I will stay within the budget I have set for each item. (And how did that work out?)
3) I won't get into a bidding war with the woman from Tulsa. (Oops)

So, it's Friday night. We decide to attend the local auction because they had a mannequin I wanted. Unfortunately, someone else wanted it more than me. (Thank goodness it wasn't the woman from Tulsa.) It sold way too high. Which left me sitting there with a number in my hand and the urge to raise it... over and over and over. Good thing they had other things that I managed to acquire without completely breaking the bank.

The first was a beautiful drop leaf secretary. I'm not sure just how old it is. If I had to guess, and I do, I'd say it was probably made in the 40's. What is really interesting about it is the carvings and the wood pieces in the glass doors. They are obviously hand carved.

As you can see the inside has lots of drawers and places to hide your stuff.

Again, the carvings are obviously done by hand.

The carved feet are unlike anything I have seen before on a piece like this.

Next item (s) up; Aren't these the cutest little cabinets? They are new but I thought that especially the one with all the drawers would be a great place to keep small crafting supplies. You can never have too much storage.

This antique tilting photo frame is in perfect condition... lots of chippy and peely paint!

This table is a reproduction and not in very good shape. But don't you think it will look great when it is sanded and painted and sanded and glazed and ends up looking like it needs to be sanded and painted and sanded and...

I also got a really great, very large bookcase. But it is still in the trailer. It will also need to be sanded and painted and sanded and glazed and...

Thanks for stopping by.

For as long as I can remember, linens and lace have always been a part of my life. They were not only present on every special occasion, but were used to add small touches to our everyday lives, making even the ordinary moments special and memorable.

The first time we are surrounded by linens and lace might be when loving hands tenderly wrap us up in an heirloom christening gown. Later, the corner of a simple lace handkerchief tucked in grandmothers pocket, then customary, now used as the lining of a straw tote or repurposed and stitched into a pillow, brings a touch of nostalgia.

I used to watch in fascination and excitement as my mother and grandmother brought out special tablecloths, some trimmed in lace, others with intricate layers of crochet stitches. I would excitedly wonder what special occasion we were celebrating. Often, it was a simple milestone, made extraordinary by the use of Mom’s special collection of linens. You could just feel the excitement in the air when these special linens came out of their safe storage.

I fondly remember a linen tablecloth with delicate lace around the edges, was lovingly spread on the table for holiday dinners. As a child, that might have been my very favorite. Or was it the beautiful crochet tablecloth with the impossibly intricate pattern of lace that seemed to tumble right off the end of my mothers' crochet hook? I had an appreciation for the beauty of my mother’s collection of linens and lace at a very early age. Today this very collection, added to one of my own, continues to add beauty and grace to my everyday life as well as to special occasions.

Over 60 ladies participated! My swap partner was Sandy of Hobnobbers.

My Valentine box was filled to overflowing with incredibly beautiful and imaginative gifts. Thank you again, Sandy!

I don't know if I can say one was more wonderful than the other... however the heart shaped lace pillow cover was just, well, I have to say it... to die for! It is just breathtaking. Then there was an adorable pair of tiny, ceramic, high heel shoes; a lovely lace doily/place mat; an embroidered, vintage hankie; a silver hors d'oeuvres fork; old hymnal pages; soaps; candles; bath crystals; a beautiful heart shaped, lace covered box which contained shells and game pieces spelling the word LOVE; tea stained, heart shaped paper doilies; bath/facial buff pads; 1920's music sheets; "Bits & Bobs" of trim, lace and stickers; a ceramic bird ornament; a sliver coin purse; gift tags; and of course chocolate! I hope I didn't leave anything out!

I was sent the links to all the other ladies blogs but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get them to post. I am not that "blog" literate. I can design a brochure for you in Photoshop but just can't seem to get the hang of the blog world. I will keep trying. I will post the list at the bottom, below the photos, but it will only contain their name and the name of their blog. No link.
However, I did get some pics of the next house on the list.

I've told the owner that I don't believe that we want to tackle the first part of this job but if we have to follow these people, and this is the work of the first construction team ... I just don't know.

I believe that from the looks of that toilet, either the aim was really bad or someone was taking their frustration out on the house.

I do believe that the cold temperature has something to do with it. I think I will wait until it warms up a bit to try that again.

However, one project has finally been completed. At least for now. The sewing room was in desperate need of additional storage. So my wonderful DH built me a storage cabinet to hold all those plastic bins that on their own just don't want to stack. We moved a couple of pieces out that didn't seem to be working, moved a couple of new ones in, traded out one printer cabinet for another and just like magic (yeah, right) storage for everything. The new pieces don't match the others but that will be taken care of at a later date. Right now, I can work without tripping over a bunch of boxes and I have room to get around my cutting table.

So, this is where I work. It is so much easier to breath with everything organized!
I have some ideas for some new doll bedding. Now that the newsletter is over for a couple of hours, (!!!) at least that is the way it seems, I can concentrate on other things for a few days.

This week, if all goes well, I will finally get started on the tub. I'm procrastinating...Verahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16662023648184723433noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6279758933165889486.post-68243467748054623462010-01-07T17:57:00.005-06:002010-01-08T08:17:57.863-06:00Getting Into The Swing Of 2010Things have really been busy around here for the last week or so. 2010 has sort of sent a boost of energy through the household.

We have come up with the Twin Bed for the American Girl sized doll! And now we have added a pink bed with pink and brown bedding that is just as cute as it is sophisticated! Any feedback would be appreciated!

Look What We Found!!
This iron headboard was in a pile of junk behind an old barn. It is really old and in pretty bad shape but it is exactly what I have been looking for! Never mind the fact that someone did their best to destroy this beautiful iron (and I mean iron... this looks light and whimpy! Trust me, it is not. It is solid iron and very heavy) headboard. Why someone would take this and weld on a set of hinges, add barbed wire for good measure and use it as a gate is just beyond me. But they did and it is my job to return it to... well maybe not original shape, but one that is usable. Ok, I know what you are probably thinking. "What is SHE thinking!" I know, it is in really bad shape. But look at the bones... I don't know how old this headboard is but... it is really old. We are going to use it in the new guest bath room. I know... putting a bed in a bathroom?? It is a really big bathroom. And since the only other bedroom in the house is ours, we need a place for a guest to sleep besides an airbed on the floor.
Doesn't that sound great... 2010! I like the sound, even the idea of new things just around the corner.

My first "new thing" is a new bed design for the American Girl doll sized dolls (18 inch). We took a few inches off the sides, length and height for those with limited space, So, we are calling it a twin bed.

Her very own fireplace. What could be more comforting on those cold, blustery winter nights than sitting in front of the fireplace with a hot cup of cocoa and some warm, fresh from the oven, chocolate chip cookies. Count me in!

I shouldn't have to say this, but that is not a real fire. Looks real though, doesn't it!

The bedding is one of our Christmas collections, "Candy Cane Dreams." And the throw at the end of the bed? Double sided and made from the softest stretch velvet! I have to make one for myself.
The AshLeigh Day Bed
The AshLeigh Day-Bed is finished... well, at least the main part. We will add a trundle/storage which will slide under the bed and can be used for another bed for use when the girls get together for a sleep over. It can also be used to store pillows, extra blankets, bedding
or other essential items.

This is the front view of the day-bed. It is a glossy white with a fabric insert in the backboard. The bed is sold separate from the bedding and rug.

The Bedding: The comforter is reversible. There are dust ruffles on all 4 sides and a soft, silky throw accented with pink glove-leather, which has been fringed. There is also an accent pillow made from the same pink leather, fringed on the edges. There are 3 snaps on the top of the pillow which will open and allow the pillow form to be removed. The pillow casing can then double as a clutch purse. There is only one set of the pink leather accented throw and pink leather pillow. When it's gone, it's gone!

The white faux fur rug is also sold separately. The trim around the edge is white polka dots on a black background.

This is the detailing on the top of the sheet. The pillow case has the same detailing on the opening edge. This view also show the reverse side of the comforter.
The plan for the weekend is to have a new bed in the series completed by Sunday. It is a white daybed and while the bed itself is finished, the bedding is not. Stay tuned for an update by Monday.Verahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16662023648184723433noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6279758933165889486.post-74598249960555824102009-10-26T21:05:00.022-05:002009-11-19T16:28:04.042-06:00And The Winner Is!A Midnight Shopping Spree
‘Twas a week before Christmas and all through the house…it didn’t look like an upcoming celebration at all. No gifts had been purchased. No decorations had been bought. There was nothing to set a holiday feast.
The clock struck midnight and I in my bed was kept awake by this thought: How will I finish my holiday shopping this year? How? Between standing in lines and fighting the crowds, I could shop everyday this week until next and still not have everything bought and gift wrapped in time!
Then I had an idea. “I’ve got it!” I cried. “I’ll go shopping right now, while everyone else is home asleep in their beds. With no lineups to tackle, checkout will be a breeze!” A sinister smile crept across my face as I realized…maybe the clerks would have time to gift wrap my purchases too.
How does one prepare for a midnight holiday shopping spree? I envisioned myself creeping downstairs, in my curlers and cold cream, black pants and coat. Making my way across town, darting in and out of shadows, blending in where I could. At all costs, I must avoid alerting others to my brilliant shopping scheme.

The risks would be worth it. When the security guards saw my dire need, they would let me in to my favorite store, where I could buy everything on my list!
And with that thought I was so excited I nearly shot out of bed. But I crashed back onto my pillow as reality hit. The guards would most likely think me an intruder instead of a desperate holiday shopper.
But maybe, just maybe, all was not lost. I could slip on my slippers and tiptoe downstairs. I could do my shopping online instead! There would be no worries of leaving the house in my curlers and cold cream. No need to dash across dimly lit streets. No crowds to wrestle, no hour long lines. Just shop after shop of everything I needed, all ready for me to buy with the click of a mouse!
I had been warned of the dangers of shopping online. But I would only choose sites that I knew I could trust, and not give my information to anyone who seemed suspicious. It would be as safe as going to my favorite store in the middle of the day, only without the danger of getting trampled. And that is exactly what I did.

As I begin my online shopping spree, it soon became apparent that unless I had a destination in mind this might be a really long night. Then much to my surprise I happened upon a wonderful little boutique mall named Make Mine Pink. Now, I thought, here is the place for me. My first stop was at Caroline Alexander (www.CarolineAlexander.net) where I found the most precious Fairy House. These fairy houses are one-of-a-kind, hand-built designs by Jennifer Cameron. They are made from clay and crafted with meticulous detail. The base of each house is pressed into tree bark to give it a realistic fairy house look. Real leaves and molds are used to form each tiny and unique detail on the house. Each house is hand glazed in beautiful pastel shades and often embellished with “pixie dust.” Some of the houses are decorated with Swarovski rhinestones for that extra sparkle. My precious daughter is going to love it! The next stop was at Gail Friend Designs (www.gailfrienddesigns.com) where the cutest pillows I have ever seen were waiting there just for me! They look like ice cream cones and I had to have one for my Aunt Ginnie...she LOVES ice cream. And ice cream without calories...how could I go wrong. Then just as I was finishing up I found the most unique brooche/pin cushion for my sew-crazy sister. It was at The Polka Dot Rose (www.thepolkadotrose.com). A Cinderella slipper made from heirloom laces, vintage brooches, and strikingly beautiful hand made silk roses! So, in no time at all, I had purchased everything I needed, plus a few extra goodies just for me. Some of the items were being shipped already gift wrapped too. My holiday shopping was saved!
I went back upstairs and fell back into bed. I drifted off to dreamland, this one thought in my mind: “Happy holiday shopping to all, and to all a good night.”
